From an Oyster Factory a women's group show, "Venus", rises.
This past spring in Washington D.C. Nathan Shroyer viewed an exhibit
of the infamous 'Gorilla Girls'. He walked away from that experience
inspired to provide a gallery space for women artists in his native
city of New Orleans.
'Captain Pete's Oyster Factory' on N. Rampart had been providing the
city with mouthwatering mollusks for some sixty years when it
unexpectedly had to close up shop in readiness for Katrina. Sadly
Captain Pete passed away soon after the storm and the doors of his
beloved oyster factory remained closed until Nathan purchased it this
summer.
Meanwhile, all year long New Orleans artists, Tamar Taylor and
Alexandria Montgomery had been busy creating works of art in
anticipation of the upcoming Prospect 1. Determined to give their
works voice, the only thing they were missing was a venue
.
It didn't take long for other women artists in the community to jump
on board and soon "Venus Rising" Women of the Gulf Coast South was
born.
A satellite exhibit of P.1, "Venus" consists of twelve women artists.
Works on display include drawings, paintings, sculpture, installation,
and assemblage. The exhibit will be open in conjunction with P. 1
through January 18th. Gallery hours are Thursday thru Sunday 12-6p.m.
